C.H.E.S.S.Africatown~C.H.E.S.S. exists to ensure that the Africatown community, in Mobile, Alabama is Clean, Healthy, Educated, Safe, & Sustainable. Through our partnership with the Deep South Center for Environmental Justice (DSCEJ), the HBCU-CBO Gulf Coast Equity Consortium, and the Kellogg Foundation, we will implement strategies and the best practices to improve the quality of life in our regions most underserved areas. Mobile BayKeeperWe research environmental issues across our watershed that impact public health and our quality of life. We build relationships with elected officials and business, industry, and agency leaders, knowing that without their engagement we cannot grow responsibly. We educate our fellow citizens about our waterways and the impacts every individual has on our natural resources. MCTS Alumni FoundationThe Mobile County Training School Alumni Association, a non-profit, tax-exempt, 501(c)(3) organization, is dedicated to protecting, preserving and promoting the history and achievements of the MCTS family, and its descendants, by documenting and recording, for posterity, the accomplishments and experiences of its family by awarding scholarships and publishing the Alumni experience to encourage others. MEJACThe Mobile Environmental Justice Action Coalition was formed in 2013 with the mission to engage and organize with Mobile’s most threatened communities in order to defend the inalienable rights to clean air, water, soil, health, and safety and to take direct action when government fails to do so, ensuring community self-determination. AFRICATown Heritage House and MuseumAfricatown Heritage House is a community building that will house “Clotilda: The Exhibition,” to share the long-untold story of the nation’s last known slave ship, the Clotilda, and the community that was created by the vessel’s survivors and their descendants. It is also the site of the new outdoor classroom and Africatown Healing Garden funded by STEMMing The Tide. National Geographic awarded the Heritage House as the Best Museum Opening in 2023. Hope Community Center/Mobile County Parks and RecreationThe Hope Community Center is the heart of Africatown. It is the site of community meetings, after school programming and provides numerous other services to the community including a food pantry. During COVID, the director of the community center would hand deliver food items to residents and visit with them daily to help maintain the sense of community, service and care. Baldwin County Solid Waste - Recycling Outreach and educationBaldwin county is in the process of building a new material recovery facility and education center that students will be able to visit.
